IV Therapy is a method of injecting fluids, medications and vitamins directly into a patient’s bloodstream intravenously. It can be used to help treat a variety of conditions, including nutritional deficiencies and dehydration.

What is IV therapy used for?

People with malabsorption issues, such as Crohn’s disease, short bowel syndrome or cystic fibrosis have been known to find relief from IV therapy. It is also commonly used by athletes to increase their athletic performance by reducing inflammation, boosting hydration and removing toxins from the body.

The treatment usually lasts for 30 to 60 minutes and is supervised by a health care professional. Before the treatment begins, a healthcare professional will clean and sanitize the area where they plan to insert the needle (Picture 1). They then choose a vein in the arm or neck, and use a small tube called a cannula to enter the vein. Once the cannula is in place, a small piece of tubing, called an extension, is attached to it. The other end of the extension is then connected to a bag of IV fluid.

Once the cannula is inserted, a small amount of fluid is slowly dripped into the vein. This can be uncomfortable, but does not typically cause any pain. Once the fluid reaches your bloodstream, it takes about 45 minutes to feel the effects of the cocktail, depending on its contents.

Many IV drip companies offer a variety of hydration and vitamin/electrolyte cocktails. Some even offer booster shots like a combination of L-Arginine and L-Citrulline, which are believed to promote muscle growth and reduce oxidative stress and fatigue.
